Harry Potter Hits Billion!

Harry Potter Hits Billion!

Finally, in a shot time, Harry Potter has joined the billion-dollar club. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It's soon expected to pass "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which is this year's top grossing movie at $1.03 billion. The last of the eight films about the young wizard is the first in the franchise to reach the billion dollar mark.

The previous best global haul was $974.8 million for the original film, 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." With $21.9 million domestically this weekend, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" climbed to a domestic total of $318.5 million. That tops the franchise's previous best of $317.6 million for "Sorcerer's Stone." But factoring in today's higher admission prices, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" has not caught up to "Sorcerer's Stone" in terms of actual tickets sold.

The 2009 film "Avatar" holds the record for the biggest worldwide box office haul, grossing $2.8 billion. It's followed by another James Cameron film, "Titanic," which brought in $1.8 billion.

Cowboys & Aliens Vs. The Smurf Tops Box Office

Cowboys & Aliens Tops Box Office
Little blue Smurfs and not-so-little green men from space are in a photo finish for the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford's science-fiction Western "Cowboys & Aliens" and the family adventure "The Smurfs" both opened with $36.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That leaves Sony's "Smurfs" and Universal's "Cowboys & Aliens" tied for the top spot. Figuring out the No. 1 movie will have to wait until final numbers are counted Monday.

LMFAOAmy Winehouse Back To Billboard Charts
Summer banger hits, "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock still tops the Hot 100 for the fourth straight week. LMFAO is the first ongoing group or duo to have a song spend four weeks at #1 since the Black Eyed Peas held the top spot for 26 straight weeks in 2009 with "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling." Adele's 21 also holds at #1 in the U.K. for the 18th week and returns to #1 Billboard 200 in its 22nd week. This is the longest run at #1 in the U.K. since the The Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever soundtrack had 18 weeks on top in 1978. While Amy Winehouse Back To Black re-enters the U.K. chart at #53, even though the tracking week there ended Saturday, the day she died. The album logged two weeks at #1 in the U.K. in January 2007. A deluxe edition hit #1 in March 2008. Winehouse, of course, paved the way for such English soul-pop singers as Adele, Duffy, Estelle and Lily Allen.

Harry Potter Ends Box Office History!

Harry Potter Box Office History
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 soared into the record books with the highest-grossing opening weekend ever. The series finale drew an estimated $168.55 million on around 11,000 screens at 4,375 locations, dethroning The Dark Knight's $158.4 million. Deathly Hallows Part 2's first weekend flew past the previous franchise high of $125 million, posted by Deathly Hallows Part 1 last November, and it topped the franchise in terms of estimated attendance as well. While its opening gross also out-distanced The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($135.6 million) and the first Spider-Man ($114.8 million), Deathly Hallows Part 2's estimated opening attendance was less than those titles, ranking sixth overall. After conjuring the opening day record on Friday ($92.1 million), Deathly Hallows Part 2 saw the steepest Friday-to-Saturday drop on record for a non-holiday first weekend, falling 53 percent to an estimated $42.85 million.
