Miss Universe 2011

The 25-year old Ms. Lopes from Benguela, Angola bested 88 other candidates from around the world.  During the question-and-answer portion, Ms. Lopes was asked by Filipina theater actress Lea Salonga: “If you could change one of your physical characteristics, which one will it be and why?”

Through an interpreter, Ms. Lopes replied that she is very happy about how she looked that she would not change a thing. Ms. Lopes, who became the first from Angola to win Miss Universe in the pageant’s 60-year history, was crowned by last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete from Mexico.

Wearing a silver and transluscent white long gown, Ms. Supsup placed Third Runner-Up after answering a question from American actress and television producer Vivica A. Fox. Ms. Fox asked Ms. Supsup if she would marry someone who is of a different religion.

The 25-year old architecture graduate from General Santos City said she will not marry a man that will require her to change her religious beliefs, saying: “The first person that I love is God.”

Creative Arts Emmy Awards 2011 Winner

HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" reigned supreme at this year's Creative Arts Emmys. The period drama - set in 1920 Atlantic City as the dawn of Prohibition begins to shift the landscape for mobsters, politicians and the like - received seven awards, including casting for a drama and cinematography for a drama, during Saturday's ceremony, held at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

"Boardwalk's" big night helped its home base, HBO, in nabbing 15 trophies, including three for "Mildred Pierce." Held before next weekend's Primetime Emmy Awards, the majority of statuettes are presented during the Creative Arts ceremony - with technical categories the primary focus and guest actors and reality recognitions also awarded. Reality series "Deadliest Catch," which airs on Discovery Channel, held its own, taking home four trophies, including noncompetition reality program. And veteran "Survivor" host Jeff Probst earned his fourth win as reality host.

Stars with multi-talents also proved to be advantageous: Gwyneth Paltrow was awarded guest actress for her three-episode arc on Fox's comedy "Glee" and singer-turned-actor Justin Timberlake scored a double Emmy win for guest actor in a comedy series and one for original music and lyrics for his "Justin Timberlake monologue" - both related to his hosting duties on "Saturday Night Live." The late-night sketch show has been fruitful for the "Social Network" star, who took home outstanding original music lyrics for "... in a Box" in 2007.

Other winners included "Glee" for comedy casting and "The Walking Dead" for prosthetic makeup. In addition, "Futurama" was crowned top animated series while the "64th Annual Tony Awards" won in the special class category. Second to HBO, PBS scored 10 wins, including costumes for a miniseries, movie or special ("Downton Abbey") and writing for nonfiction programming ("Freedom Writers").

The Creative Arts Emmys will air Sept. 17 on Reelz Channel.

Emmys in the remaining 25 categories will be presented during the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast Sept. 18 on Fox.

10 Years of 9/11

Beneath a hazy New York sky, thousands of family members and dignitaries gathered at Ground Zero on Sunday in a tear-filled ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center. 



Mayor Michael Bloomberg recalled the sunny September morning that turned into "the blackest of nights."



"Although we can never un-see what happened here, we can also see that children who lost their parents have grown into young adults, grandchildren have been born and good works and public service have taken root to honor those we loved and lost," Bloomberg says.



Nearby, President Obama and former president George Bush and their wives stood behind bullet-proof glass as the names of the people who died were read.



Quoting from the 46th Psalm, Obama spoke of God's strength, "a very present help in trouble."



One of the family members standing shoulder to shoulder was Jennifer Nilsen, holding a framed picture of her late husband, Troy, a network engineer at Cantor Fitzgerald.



"He's here somewhere, they never recovered his remains," says Nilsen, of Staten Island. "So this is his resting spot."

The ceremony marked the opening of the permanent national memorial at Ground Zero. The names of all 2,983 victims from the attacks in New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania are etched in bronze into the shimmering black stone surrounding two reflecting pools in the footprints of the Twin Towers.

At the pools, people lay American flags or draped their bodies over the names of their loved ones. 

Family members cried and hugged during the reading.

"Every day feels like it was yesterday," says Elaine Barrett of Cranford, N.J., whose sister, Donna Giordano, an insurance broker with AON, died in the South Tower.

Barrett and Giordano's son, Michael, also employees of AON, escaped that day.

"We were best friends," says Barrett, wearing a T-shirt with Donna's picture on the back, a big smile on her face. "I miss her. Whenever I have a problem or want to talk, I want to pick up the phone and call her. I don't think this will ever change."(People.com)

Contagion Tops Box Office!

Contagion is the new #1 box office after beating The Help movie that made hattrick top spot last week. The Warner Bros. pandemic thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring an A-list cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow coughed up $23.1 million in its first weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Adele Is Back on Top Billboard!

Adele's "Someone Like You" jumps from #19 to #1 in its 9 week on Billboard Hot 100. Adele performed the stark ballad on MTV's Video Music Awards, which gave it the boost it needed to go all the way. The song jumps from #11 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs. It sold 275,000 copies this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the biggest weekly total by any song since Adele's previous hit, "Rolling In The Deep," sold 297K copies in May, when it was in its third week at #1. "Someone Like You" jumps from #42 to #19 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. It registered 46 million "all-format audience impressions," according to Nielsen BDS. That's up a whopping 59% over the previous week.

THE HELP Box Office Hattrick

The Help runs on TOP this third weekend in a row, remaining close to Summer 2011. This week, the movie gets down only two percent from last weekend,
the drama earned an estimated $14.2 million, lifting its total to $118.6
million in 26 days. For the four-day Labor Day weekend, distributor Walt Disney Pictures
projected The Help at $18 million.
